Spring Conferences

I have been going to so many conferences for the past two years, that last semester I wanted to take a small break and focus on my transfer to ASU. But I am glad to say that this semester I will be presenting my research at the Arizona/Nevada Conference. At Phoenix College, I work with Dr. Frank Marfai, and our goal this semester and last semester is to introduce undergraduate research to students. We know that it is very hard for students to find time outside of their already busy schedules to find an internship. So what we try to do, is build a CURE inside a statistics class. We have partnered with ADEQ (Arizona Department of Environmental Quality). They kindly share their air and water quality data for our students and they are able to use it to perform statistical tests. In the end, they make a poster and they present it to our local industries. We had some students look at the Arsenic levels over different counties, and we also had another group look at how the ozone levels can affect people with asthma. I will be sharing my findings and show how students have benefited from this. Like I know some of our students were able to talk one on one with these industry partners and get internship opportunities. 

I am excited to start going to conferences again and share my findings, and I also like to look at what other people are doing.

Prepping Everything First!

Before the spring break started the goal was to get a set of fresh new plastics treated and disinfected. So the Friday before the spring break we grated as much plastic as possible, and we even had some people donate some plastics for our project because the drill we used was having some issues. We then drained them in 100% isopropanol and let them air dry inside the hood to allow them to be ready for after the break. When we came back the plastics were then tested on PIA plated to see if there was any contamination in them before we could start the incubation process. Plastic #3 did show signs of slight contamination so they were treated one more time to see if we could get rid of it and actually start our next step next week.

Bio Science Conference at the Convention Center!

I am excited to say that Maria and I will be attending this Arizona Industry Association conference on October 3rd. Thanks to the recommendation by Dr. Cotter we decided to give this conference a shot, and sure enough, we were accepted got the email confirming our attendance. This will be the first conference we will be attending for the year, so we are going to dedicate some time to practice our presentation and to get more familiar with speaking in front of crowds of people again. I am really excited to be attending this conference and to see what kind of research other people are doing around the valley. It should be a good learning experience for us.

Hard Work Pays Off! 2018 WAESO this week!

It shows the bacteria I was working on which is Pseudomonas aeruginosa,  When I left school Friday afternoon I thought I was going to have a regular easy going weekend. Usually, on my weekends I work from 7am to 3pm, so my whole morning is occupied working. With just a few days away from the 2018 WAESO Conference there was a lot of preparing to do for our posters Like I was saying I thought the posters were all set for the conference... I thought wrong. During the week there was so much editing to do with the posters. Every little tedious detail had to be just right, and that is what made this project a little harder. Do not get me wrong, in the end when I looked at the final edition of what was going to be printed the team and I felt so proud! All of our hard work finally paid off! Now I have to start preparing for my presentation, for the actual conference on Friday! Exciting!!
