Bio Science Conference at the Convention Center!

I am excited to say that Maria and I will be attending this Arizona Industry Association conference on October 3rd. Thanks to the recommendation by Dr. Cotter we decided to give this conference a shot, and sure enough, we were accepted got the email confirming our attendance. This will be the first conference we will be attending for the year, so we are going to dedicate some time to practice our presentation and to get more familiar with speaking in front of crowds of people again. I am really excited to be attending this conference and to see what kind of research other people are doing around the valley. It should be a good learning experience for us.

    OMG! Congratulations on getting into the Conference! I'm super excited for both of you to attend! If y'all want to practice your presentation in front of anyone, I'll be in the lab on Friday and definitely don't mind lending my ears! You girls rock!

    I thought you guys did an awesome job relaying the info to me. I'm sure that you'll be amazing. I'm excited to hear about it. When you were talking about it, it sounded like it had the potential to be one of the more fun conferences. Make sure to take good mental notes about the research happening in our area! I wanna hear about that!

Using the SEM

This week the team had a chance to use the SEM machine one more time. We needed to get the last images for from the treated plastics that were stored in the minus 80 fridge. The images that the team observed were very outstanding. We got new images that were different from the images that were taken at the beginning. That is because the images that were taken at the beginning were just with the plastics,  and the images taken recently were combined with the different types of Pseudomonas. Next week we will finish getting the rest of the images under the SEM.

Prepping Everything First!

Before the spring break started the goal was to get a set of fresh new plastics treated and disinfected. So the Friday before the spring break we grated as much plastic as possible, and we even had some people donate some plastics for our project because the drill we used was having some issues. We then drained them in 100% isopropanol and let them air dry inside the hood to allow them to be ready for after the break. When we came back the plastics were then tested on PIA plated to see if there was any contamination in them before we could start the incubation process. Plastic #3 did show signs of slight contamination so they were treated one more time to see if we could get rid of it and actually start our next step next week.

My College Experiences

  Picture My college experience has been all over the place. I first started at Phoenix College, which was an amazing experience. After taking all the courses for an associate's degree, I transferred to ASU West campus. I can relate this transition to when someone is moving to another job and moving to another company. This transition at first was not easy for me. The change took some time to get used to, but I can only imagine how it feels when you move somewhere new or get a new job. Another college experience that I can relate to as an employer-desired experience is my specified classes that are in forensic science. For example, the first class I took when I first transferred was a principles in forensic science, and to this day, this has been one of my favorite classes. I learned so many forensics techniques that I know that I can apply to a work field. Lastly, another college experience would be using the techniques I used to meet new people and professors.
